SAINT JÓZEF BILCZEWSKI, A RESEARCHER OF CHRISTIAN ANTIQUITY,
IN LIGHT OF UNKNOWN SOURCE MATERIALS FROM THE YEARS 1885-1900

ABSTRACT
???Józef Bilczewski (1860-1923), a saint of the Catholic Church, Archbishop of Lviv of the Latin rite in the years 1901-1923, an outstanding pastor, a phenomenal organizer of the archdiocese entrusted to him. These are some commonly known facts, which can easily be found in publications devoted to the saint Archbishop of Lviv. The figure of Józef Bilczewski, a theologian, professor of Lviv University in the years 1891-1900, a researcher of the Christian Antiquity, a promoter of the new scientific discipline of Christian archaeology, and finally - a visionary, who for the purposes of dogmatic theology developed an innovative methodology of work that combined theology with Church history and Christian archaeology, is not very well known. This book is devoted to him. This work is divided into three parts. In the first part, Jozef Bilczewski (Biba) - the road from Wilamowice to Rome, the author wanted to present the evolution of the scientific interests of the subsequent Saint in interaction with prominent scientists of that time in Kraków, Vienna, Rome and Paris. The second part (The Krakow period and habilitation at the Jagiellonian University: 1888-1890) is devoted to Józef Bilczewski?s preparation for the book Archeologia chrześcijańska wobec historii Kościoła i dogmatu [Christian archaeology in terms of the history of the Church and dogma], which became the basis for his habilitation at the Jagiellonian University in 1890. In light of his work on the book, an attempt was made to describe not only the scientific and research activities of the Pole, but also the role of the young Roman archaeologist Józef Wipert (1857-1944). However, the main aim of the author in this part of the work was to capture the innovative research method developed by Józef Bilczewski. A method which for the purposes of dogmatic theology widely used not only the texts of the fathers of the Church, but in the search for fons theologicus boldly explored the source material collected in Roman catacombs, treating gravestone epigraphics and early Christian art as loci theologici on an equal footing with other theological sources.
???The last part of this work (The period of intense scientific and research activity at the University of Lviv) focuses on the scientific work which Józef Bilczewski conducted at the University in Lviv. Its measurable effect were numerous publications in the years 1891-1900, primarily the monograph Eucharystia w świetle najdawniejszych pomnikow piśmiennych, ikonograficznych, epigraficznych [The Eucharist in light of the oldest monuments of writing, epigraphy, iconography]. These materials are thoroughly analysed in order to look at the refinement of Józef Bilczewski is interdisciplinary research technique. As a result of this analysis, it can be concluded that the search for fons theologicus, though important for the dogmatic theologian, did not constitute an absolute determinant of his work. Even archaeological sources as loci theologici, which Józef Bilczewski the Christian archaeologist was so captivated with, were for him another step to discovering the truth about the condition of faith of the original Church.
???The final conclusions of this study are as follows: Not only did this prominent researcher develop a phenomenal theological technique of a dogmatist, based on side-by-side analysis of three kinds of sources (loci theologici): patristic, epigraphic and iconographic, but his research on the Christian antiquity has a much broader perspective. His study, which focuses on the development of dogmas of faith, also shows how the experience of this faith was an important element throughout the original Church.
???Therefore, Józef Bilczewski?s method significantly surpasses the perspective of a dogmatist or archaeologist?s interests, and the conclusions resulting from the comparison of patristic, epigraphic and iconographic sources provide new answers to the questions posed by ancient Church historians. This method is so unusual that it enabled Józef Bilczewski to explore not only the faith of educated Church elites, but also the space of popular religiosity, not to mention the fact that this perspective of theological research significantly enriched the understanding of fons theologicus. Unfortunately, Józef Bilczewski had no disciples to whom he could hand down the interdisciplinary method he had developed, and because he abandoned science to serve as Archbishop at an early age of 40, his method was simply forgotten. Although the research contained in Józef Bilczewski is treaties has somewhat lost its validity, his theological-historical- archaeological method remains not only valid in today's incredibly homogeneous science. The method even seems highly desirable, a possible inspiration for dogmatists and Church historians and a door to an extremely broad perspective for studying the history of the original Church.
